Dropped kerb applications across the Isle of Wight

A dropped kerb, or vehicle crossover, is a lowered section of kerb and strengthened pavement that lets a car cross the footway to reach a driveway. It needs consent from the highway authority (your council in England, Wales and Scotland; DfI Roads in Northern Ireland), and the work in the pavement is done by that authority or a contractor it approves.

Driving over a pavement without a dropped kerb is an offence and can damage pipes and cables under the footway, so a new drive with no crossing should not be used until one is in place.

Projects we quote in and around Newport include fitting setts or steel edging around a new drive, adding a soakaway so water stays on the property and setting a channel drain across a garage entrance.

Prices in the Isle of Wight

Labour and material costs in the South East run above the UK average, and the guide figures below reflect that. They include VAT and are confirmed after a survey.

Dropped kerb applications: about £1,000–£2,500 per crossing, set by the highway authority.

Planning in the Isle of Wight

A dropped kerb always needs consent from your council as local highway authority, whether or not the driveway itself needs planning permission. A new access onto a classified road can need planning permission as well.

Weather and working days

The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. If the weather turns on the day, we move the pour rather than risk a surface that will not cure.
