Resin driveways

Every way to get a resin driveway: laid over a sound base you already have, or built from the ground up on a new permeable sub-base.

Resin driveways: common questions

How long does a resin bound driveway last?

Laid correctly over a sound base, resin bound driveways typically last 15–25 years. The base, the depth of resin and the type of resin used make the biggest difference.

Is resin bonded permeable?

No. The resin layer seals the base, so rainwater runs off. On a front garden in England that can mean the drive needs to drain to a lawn or border, or planning permission is needed.

Can you lay resin over old tarmac?

Yes, if the tarmac is sound, level and fully cured. Tarmac that is breaking up, rutted or soft has to come out first, otherwise the faults show through the resin.

How deep is the dig-out for a resin driveway?

It depends on the ground and the traffic, but a domestic drive is commonly excavated 150–250 mm to fit the sub-base and binder course under the resin.

What makes a driveway SuDS compliant?

Water must be able to pass through the surface and the layers underneath into the ground, or drain to a permeable area on your property, rather than onto the road or into the public sewer.

Do I need permission to widen my driveway?

The paving itself is usually permitted development if it is permeable or drains within your property. Widening the dropped kerb always needs consent from the highway authority (your council, or DfI Roads in Northern Ireland).
