Dropped kerb applications across the Scottish Borders
A dropped kerb, or vehicle crossover, is a lowered section of kerb and strengthened pavement that lets a car cross the footway to reach a driveway. It needs consent from the highway authority (your council in England, Wales and Scotland; DfI Roads in Northern Ireland), and the work in the pavement is done by that authority or a contractor it approves.
Highway authorities look at visibility, distance from junctions, trees, lamp posts and the size of the parking space. We measure the drive to the authority's standard, help with the application drawings and photographs, and time the drive so it is ready when the crossing is built.
In Hawick we can price work such as fitting setts or steel edging around a new drive, setting a channel drain across a garage entrance and preparing a drive to meet a new dropped kerb.

Planning in the Scottish Borders
A dropped kerb always needs consent from your council as roads authority, whether or not the driveway itself needs planning permission. A new access onto a classified road can need planning permission as well.
Weather and working days
The South of Scotland mixes wet western hills with drier eastern lowlands, and frost is common in winter. If the weather turns on the day, we move the pour rather than risk a surface that will not cure.

Dropped kerb applications in the Scottish Borders: questions
Do I need planning permission in the Scottish Borders?
Scotland's householder permitted development rules allow many hard surfaces at a house where the surface is porous or water drains to a permeable area within the property. A fully permeable resin bound build, with a porous base under it, meets that test.
Is the price fixed for the Scottish Borders jobs?
Yes, once the scope and specification are agreed in writing. If hidden ground conditions turn up, we explain and agree any change with you before doing extra work.
