Dropped kerb applications across Suffolk
A dropped kerb, or vehicle crossover, is a lowered section of kerb and strengthened pavement that lets a car cross the footway to reach a driveway. It needs consent from the highway authority (your council in England, Wales and Scotland; DfI Roads in Northern Ireland), and the work in the pavement is done by that authority or a contractor it approves.
Driving over a pavement without a dropped kerb is an offence and can damage pipes and cables under the footway, so a new drive with no crossing should not be used until one is in place.
Projects we quote in and around Ipswich include digging out an old drive and building a permeable sub-base, replacing failed edges that have started to crumble and preparing a drive to meet a new dropped kerb.
Prices in Suffolk
For the East of England, where typical costs are above the UK average, these are the ranges we would expect before seeing your property.
Dropped kerb applications: about £1,000–£2,500 per crossing, set by the highway authority.
Planning in Suffolk
A dropped kerb always needs consent from your council as local highway authority, whether or not the driveway itself needs planning permission. A new access onto a classified road can need planning permission as well.
Weather and working days
The East of England is the driest part of the UK, which gives a long resin laying season, though heavy clays in places mean the sub-base needs designing for slow drainage. Surveys run all year; resin work itself waits for a dry day above about 5°C.

How soon can you survey in Suffolk?

Do I need planning permission in Suffolk?
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. A fully permeable resin bound build, with a porous base under it, meets that test.
Is the price fixed for Suffolk jobs?
Yes, once the scope and specification are agreed in writing. If hidden ground conditions turn up, we explain and agree any change with you before doing extra work.
