Resin bonded driveways across Essex

A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.

The finish looks like a gravel drive but behaves more like a sealed surface. It has excellent grip, which is why it is used on ramps, steep drives and the approaches to junctions, but it is impermeable, so water has to be managed with falls and drainage.

In Southend-on-Sea we can price work such as adding a channel drain where a drive falls towards the garage, replacing tired block paving with a permeable resin build and widening a drive into the front garden for a second car.

Prices in Essex

Prices in the East of England are above the UK average. These are guide ranges including VAT; your quote follows a free survey.

Resin bonded driveways: £40–£110 per m².

As a guide, a 32 m² drive in the CM area would be around £1,200–£1,900 laid over a sound existing base, rising to about £2,250–£3,450 with a dig-out and new base.

Planning in Essex

In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.

Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.

Weather and working days

The East of England is the driest part of the UK, which gives a long resin laying season, though heavy clays in places mean the sub-base needs designing for slow drainage. If the weather turns on the day, we move the pour rather than risk a surface that will not cure.
