Resin bonded driveways across the Forth Valley

A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.

The finish looks like a gravel drive but behaves more like a sealed surface. It has excellent grip, which is why it is used on ramps, steep drives and the approaches to junctions, but it is impermeable, so water has to be managed with falls and drainage.

Projects we quote in and around Stirling include overlaying sound tarmac on a two-car drive, turning a cracked concrete drive into a seamless resin bound surface and widening a drive into the front garden for a second car.

Worked example: a 47 m² drive in the Forth Valley laid as an overlay on sound tarmac or concrete would typically come to about £1,450–£2,300. The same area with a dig-out and new base would be nearer £2,700–£4,200.

Planning in the Forth Valley

Scotland's householder permitted development rules allow many hard surfaces at a house where the surface is porous or water drains to a permeable area within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.

Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas are treated differently, so if any of those apply we suggest a quick check with your council's planning team before work starts.

Weather and working days

Central Scotland gets steady rainfall through the year, so a permeable build and well-planned falls keep drives free of standing water. We only lay resin on dry days with ground and air above about 5°C, so Stirling jobs are booked with the forecast in mind.
