Resin bonded driveways across Oxfordshire
A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.
The finish looks like a gravel drive but behaves more like a sealed surface. It has excellent grip, which is why it is used on ramps, steep drives and the approaches to junctions, but it is impermeable, so water has to be managed with falls and drainage.
In Oxford we can price work such as adding a channel drain where a drive falls towards the garage, widening a drive into the front garden for a second car and building a fully permeable drive on a front garden.
Prices in Oxfordshire
Labour and material costs in the South East run above the UK average, and the guide figures below reflect that. They include VAT and are confirmed after a survey.
Resin bonded driveways: £40–£110 per m².
Typical Oxfordshire figures for a 52 m² drive: £2,050–£3,200 over sound tarmac or concrete; £3,800–£5,800 with a dig-out and new base. Both include VAT.
Planning in Oxfordshire
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.
Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.
Weather and working days
The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. Spring to autumn offers the most laying days in Oxfordshire, but dry, mild winter days can work too.
