Resin bonded driveways across Surrey
A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.
The finish looks like a gravel drive but behaves more like a sealed surface. It has excellent grip, which is why it is used on ramps, steep drives and the approaches to junctions, but it is impermeable, so water has to be managed with falls and drainage.
Projects we quote in and around Woking include building a fully permeable drive on a front garden, framing a golden blend with charcoal granite setts and adding a channel drain where a drive falls towards the garage.
Prices in Surrey
Prices in the South East are above the UK average. These are guide ranges including VAT; your quote follows a free survey.
Resin bonded driveways: £40–£110 per m².
Worked example: a 26 m² drive in Surrey laid as an overlay on sound tarmac or concrete would typically come to about £1,000–£1,600. The same area with a dig-out and new base would be nearer £1,900–£2,900.
Planning in Surrey
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.
Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.
Weather and working days
The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. If the weather turns on the day, we move the pour rather than risk a surface that will not cure.
