What resin bound driveways involve

A resin bound driveway is a surface of natural stone aggregate mixed with clear polyurethane resin and trowelled by hand to a depth of around 18 mm on driveways. Every stone is fully coated, so the finish is smooth, has no loose gravel, and lets rainwater drain straight through it.

Any quote we prepare in Halifax says which base route we recommend and why, with the depth, the resin and the aggregate written down. Halifax has a broad mix of housing, from terraces near the centre to detached homes on the edges.

Projects we quote in and around Halifax include widening a drive into the front garden for a second car, adding a channel drain where a drive falls towards the garage and building a fully permeable drive on a front garden. More about resin bound driveways.

Prices for resin bound driveways in Halifax

For Yorkshire and the Humber, where typical costs are a little below the UK average, these are the ranges we would expect before seeing your property.

Worked example: a 32 m² drive in Halifax laid as an overlay on sound tarmac or concrete would typically come to about £1,350–£2,100. The same area with a dig-out and new permeable base would be nearer £2,250–£3,550.

Planning in Halifax

In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. A fully permeable resin bound build, with a porous base under it, meets that test.

Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.

Weather and working days

Rainfall varies widely across Yorkshire, from the drier Vale of York to wetter Pennine towns, and cold snaps shorten the laying season at either end. If the weather turns on the day, we move the pour rather than risk a surface that will not cure.
