What resin over tarmac and concrete involves
A resin overlay is a resin bound surface laid directly on top of an existing tarmac or concrete driveway that is still sound. It is the cheapest way to get a resin drive because there is no dig-out, but it only works when the old surface is level, stable and free of active cracking.
In Reading, as anywhere, the base is the part that decides how long a resin surface lasts. The survey settles whether we overlay, repair or rebuild it. Housing in Reading ranges from Victorian terraces to post-war semis and newer estates, and drive sizes vary just as much.
Projects we quote in and around Reading include building a fully permeable drive on a front garden, framing a golden blend with charcoal granite setts and replacing tired block paving with a permeable resin build. More about resin over tarmac and concrete.
Prices for resin over tarmac and concrete in Reading
Guide prices for Reading are based on South East rates, which are above the UK average. The written quote after your survey is the figure that counts.
Typical Reading figures for a 33 m² drive: £1,650–£2,600 over sound tarmac or concrete; £2,750–£4,450 with a dig-out and new permeable base. Both include VAT.

Planning in Reading
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. An overlay on sealed tarmac or concrete does not drain through the old base, so the drive needs to fall towards a lawn, border or soakaway on your land, or the old base comes out for a permeable build.
Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.

Weather and working days
The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. Spring to autumn offers the most laying days in Berkshire, but dry, mild winter days can work too.
