Resin over tarmac and concrete across East Sussex
A resin overlay is a resin bound surface laid directly on top of an existing tarmac or concrete driveway that is still sound. It is the cheapest way to get a resin drive because there is no dig-out, but it only works when the old surface is level, stable and free of active cracking.
Adding around 18 mm of resin raises the level of the drive, so the survey also checks door thresholds, damp-proof courses, airbricks and drainage channels. In most cases this is handled with edging details or by cutting back at the house.
Across East Sussex, the projects we price include building a fully permeable drive on a front garden, turning a cracked concrete drive into a seamless resin bound surface and widening a drive into the front garden for a second car.
Prices in East Sussex
Labour and material costs in the South East run above the UK average, and the guide figures below reflect that. They include VAT and are confirmed after a survey.
Resin over tarmac and concrete: £50–£80 per m².
Worked example: a 49 m² drive in East Sussex laid as an overlay on sound tarmac or concrete would typically come to about £2,450–£3,850. The same area with a dig-out and new permeable base would be nearer £4,100–£6,600.
Planning in East Sussex
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. An overlay on sealed tarmac or concrete does not drain through the old base, so the drive needs to fall towards a lawn, border or soakaway on your land, or the old base comes out for a permeable build.
Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.
Weather and working days
The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. We only lay resin on dry days with ground and air above about 5°C, so Brighton jobs are booked with the forecast in mind.
