Dropped kerb applications across Hampshire
A dropped kerb, or vehicle crossover, is a lowered section of kerb and strengthened pavement that lets a car cross the footway to reach a driveway. It needs consent from the highway authority (your council in England, Wales and Scotland; DfI Roads in Northern Ireland), and the work in the pavement is done by that authority or a contractor it approves.
Driving over a pavement without a dropped kerb is an offence and can damage pipes and cables under the footway, so a new drive with no crossing should not be used until one is in place.
Projects we quote in and around Southampton include setting a channel drain across a garage entrance, replacing failed edges that have started to crumble and fitting setts or steel edging around a new drive.

Planning in Hampshire
A dropped kerb always needs consent from your council as local highway authority, whether or not the driveway itself needs planning permission. A new access onto a classified road can need planning permission as well.
Weather and working days
The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. Spring to autumn offers the most laying days in Hampshire, but dry, mild winter days can work too.
Dropped kerb applications in Hampshire: questions
What postcodes do you cover around Hampshire?
We cover SO, PO, GU, RG and the surrounding districts, including Southampton and Portsmouth.
Do I need planning permission in Hampshire?
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. A fully permeable resin bound build, with a porous base under it, meets that test.
Who approves dropped kerbs in Hampshire?
Dropped kerb consent comes from your council as local highway authority. We help with the application and get your drive ready to meet the new crossing.
