Resin bonded driveways across Hampshire

A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.

Resin bonded is the scatter-coat system. The resin is rolled onto a solid, sound base, the aggregate is broadcast over it until it is fully covered, and once the resin has cured the excess stone is brushed off and reused.

Across Hampshire, the projects we price include adding a channel drain where a drive falls towards the garage, turning a cracked concrete drive into a seamless resin bound surface and building a fully permeable drive on a front garden.

Resin bonded driveways: £40–£110 per m².

As a guide, a 43 m² drive in the SO area would be around £1,700–£2,650 laid over a sound existing base, rising to about £3,150–£4,800 with a dig-out and new base.

Planning in Hampshire

In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.

Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.

Weather and working days

The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. Spring to autumn offers the most laying days in Hampshire, but dry, mild winter days can work too.
