Resin bonded driveways across Berkshire
A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.
Because only one layer of stone is held, some stones will come loose over the first months and the surface is less forgiving of heavy turning. That is the trade-off for a lower price per square metre.
In Reading we can price work such as replacing tired block paving with a permeable resin build, turning a cracked concrete drive into a seamless resin bound surface and framing a golden blend with charcoal granite setts.
Prices in Berkshire
For the South East, where typical costs are above the UK average, these are the ranges we would expect before seeing your property.
Resin bonded driveways: £40–£110 per m².
Typical Berkshire figures for a 48 m² drive: £1,900–£2,950 over sound tarmac or concrete; £3,500–£5,400 with a dig-out and new base. Both include VAT.
Planning in Berkshire
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.
Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.
Weather and working days
The South East is relatively dry, with long laying seasons, but clay soils are common across much of the region and can drain slowly. We only lay resin on dry days with ground and air above about 5°C, so Reading jobs are booked with the forecast in mind.
