What resin bonded driveways involve

A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.

Before quoting in Cambridge we look at three things: the base, the falls, and where water goes. Those decide the specification, and the specification decides the price. Plot sizes and existing surfaces vary a lot across Cambridge, so the survey comes before any fixed figure.

Projects we quote in and around Cambridge include widening a drive into the front garden for a second car, turning a cracked concrete drive into a seamless resin bound surface and overlaying sound tarmac on a two-car drive. More about resin bonded driveways.

Prices for resin bonded driveways in Cambridge

For the East of England, where typical costs are above the UK average, these are the ranges we would expect before seeing your property.

Worked example: a 69 m² drive in Cambridge laid as an overlay on sound tarmac or concrete would typically come to about £2,600–£4,100. The same area with a dig-out and new base would be nearer £4,850–£7,450.

Planning in Cambridge

In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.

Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.

Weather and working days

The East of England is the driest part of the UK, which gives a long resin laying season, though heavy clays in places mean the sub-base needs designing for slow drainage. We only lay resin on dry days with ground and air above about 5°C, so Cambridge jobs are booked with the forecast in mind.
