What resin bonded driveways involve

A resin bonded driveway is a solid base coated with a layer of resin onto which loose aggregate is scattered. The stones stick to the resin, giving a textured, gravel-like finish that is grippy underfoot. Unlike resin bound, it is not permeable.

Before quoting in March we look at three things: the base, the falls, and where water goes. Those decide the specification, and the specification decides the price. In and around March, drives often run further from the road, so edging, falls and drainage are planned along the whole length.

Projects we quote in and around March include overlaying sound tarmac on a two-car drive, turning a cracked concrete drive into a seamless resin bound surface and replacing tired block paving with a permeable resin build. More about resin bonded driveways.

Planning in March

In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. Resin bonded is not permeable, so on a front garden it needs to drain to a permeable area within your property.

Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.

Weather and working days

The East of England is the driest part of the UK, which gives a long resin laying season, though heavy clays in places mean the sub-base needs designing for slow drainage. Spring to autumn offers the most laying days in Cambridgeshire, but dry, mild winter days can work too.
