What dropped kerb applications involve
A dropped kerb, or vehicle crossover, is a lowered section of kerb and strengthened pavement that lets a car cross the footway to reach a driveway. It needs consent from the highway authority (your council in England, Wales and Scotland; DfI Roads in Northern Ireland), and the work in the pavement is done by that authority or a contractor it approves.
Before quoting groundworks in March we check levels against door thresholds, look for shallow services and plan where spoil and materials will go. Around March, longer drives and rural access are common, so deliveries and mixing space are planned at survey.
Projects we quote in and around March include adding a soakaway so water stays on the property, digging out an old drive and building a permeable sub-base and preparing a drive to meet a new dropped kerb. More about dropped kerb applications.

Planning in March
A dropped kerb always needs consent from your council as local highway authority, whether or not the driveway itself needs planning permission. A new access onto a classified road can need planning permission as well.

Weather and working days
The East of England is the driest part of the UK, which gives a long resin laying season, though heavy clays in places mean the sub-base needs designing for slow drainage. Spring to autumn offers the most laying days in Cambridgeshire, but dry, mild winter days can work too.

Dropped kerb applications in March: questions
Who approves dropped kerbs in March?
Dropped kerb consent comes from your council as local highway authority. We help with the application and get your drive ready to meet the new crossing.
Do I need planning permission in March?
In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. A fully permeable resin bound build, with a porous base under it, meets that test.
