What resin bound driveways involve

A resin bound driveway is a surface of natural stone aggregate mixed with clear polyurethane resin and trowelled by hand to a depth of around 18 mm on driveways. Every stone is fully coated, so the finish is smooth, has no loose gravel, and lets rainwater drain straight through it.

In March, as anywhere, the base is the part that decides how long a resin surface lasts. The survey settles whether we overlay, repair or rebuild it. Plots around March are often generous, so turning areas and longer runs of edging are part of many quotes.

Across Cambridgeshire, the projects we price include swapping loose gravel for a resin surface that stays put, adding a channel drain where a drive falls towards the garage and widening a drive into the front garden for a second car. More about resin bound driveways.

Prices for resin bound driveways in March

Labour and material costs in the East of England run above the UK average, and the guide figures below reflect that. They include VAT and are confirmed after a survey.

Worked example: a 45 m² drive in March laid as an overlay on sound tarmac or concrete would typically come to about £2,200–£3,400. The same area with a dig-out and new permeable base would be nearer £3,650–£5,850.

Planning in March

In England, a new or replaced hard surface of more than 5 m² in a front garden is permitted development only if it is porous, or if rainwater drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within the property. A fully permeable resin bound build, with a porous base under it, meets that test.

Permitted development rights apply to houses, not flats or maisonettes, and some conservation areas have Article 4 directions that remove them. Listed buildings can need consent if railings or historic walls are affected.

Weather and working days

The East of England is the driest part of the UK, which gives a long resin laying season, though heavy clays in places mean the sub-base needs designing for slow drainage. We only lay resin on dry days with ground and air above about 5°C, so March jobs are booked with the forecast in mind.
