Resin vs tarmac driveways
Tarmac is usually cheaper per square metre and very hard-wearing, but it is black, softens in hot weather and is not permeable unless a porous asphalt is used. Resin bound costs more but offers colour choice and permeability, and sound old tarmac makes a good base for it.

Is old tarmac a good base for resin?
Often, yes. Cured, level tarmac that is not breaking up can be overlaid with resin bound, which avoids a dig-out. The survey checks for movement, potholes and failed edges first.
Which is better for drainage?
Standard tarmac sheds water. Porous asphalt lets it through and is the usual binder course under a permeable resin drive.
